About A Distinctive Lens
Independent media with a distinctive point of view.
A Distinctive Lens brings together journalism, documentary production, podcasting, education and public conversation.
The company was founded by journalist, filmmaker and disability advocate Simeon Wakely. Its work examines how policy, culture and public institutions shape everyday life, while ensuring that people with lived experience are treated as sources of knowledge rather than objects of sympathy.
Care Reframed is the editorial platform within A Distinctive Lens. Beyond Care is its training and education platform. Together, they connect lived experience with journalism, public policy, professional learning and documentary storytelling.
Editorial Mission
People rather than stereotypes.
Questions rather than slogans.
Our mission is to produce journalism and documentary work that is intellectually rigorous, emotionally honest and visually distinctive.
We resist narratives that reduce disabled people, people who draw upon care, carers or support workers to statistics, case studies or symbols of adversity. We are interested in complexity, accountability and the relationship between public policy and real life.
Our work seeks to inform public debate, challenge assumptions and contribute to a richer understanding of modern Britain.
